2024 Wagga Wagga NAIDOC Week 3x3 Basketball Gala Day Highlights
Basketball NSW proudly reflects on the recent success of the NAIDOC Basketball Gala Days, held in Wagga Wagga as part of NAIDOC Week 2024.
The theme ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud’ resonated throughout these events, celebrating the enduring strength and vibrancy of First Nations culture while fostering community spirit through the love of basketball.
The 3X3 Basketball Gala Days featured a variety of engaging activities, including skill sessions, 3x3 basketball games, shooting competitions, fun games with prizes, off-court activities, and a DJ playing music all day long. Food and refreshments were also available, ensuring a festive atmosphere for all attendees.
Basketball NSW extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of these events. From the volunteers and coaches to the local communities your support and participation were instrumental in creating unforgettable celebrations. We also thank our sponsors and partners whose generosity helped make these Gala Days possible.

Great video. In future, could you mic up the coach as some of the audio was muffled when he was explaining the activities.

9:25 I feel attacked. Hahah great video Coach Jarrod! That last question is great as naturally the counter to a zone defense is a zone offense. Completely agree with a zone defense potentially stunting the defensive development of players. Sometimes teams are just lazy, other times they are too focused on winning now rather than improvement. No excuses though when coaching juniors if we're seeking long-term success.

Coach Isley is 100% correct about pivoting is one of the most important skills a player can have. I’m in my first season at a new high school and I have 9 varsity players who could not execute a reverse pivot at the beginning of the season. After much work (no joke) they are able to do so. They all were never taught at lower levels

I liked a lot of this. Thank you for sharing this. Very useful and thought provoking. I appreciate it. For the drill starting about minute 35 can progress to the passer (defender) after the pass can go to guard either the person passed to or the other person and can even try to steal the ball if the person who should have shot the ball passed or atleast be there to stop the open shot. (can award the defense with a stop if stops the open shot attempt by either a steal or getting there to contest the shot---stops the open shot.) That will make first person need to decide if is wide open to shoot or should pass. After did the variation of passing to the other spot first then can progress to the initial passer (defender) can decide who initially passes to and who goes to defend. That way both offense players must be ready to catch and shoot the first pass and have to decide if is open and should shoot or it's a contested shot should pass. etc. Obviously can switch the shooting spots, change defender's starting spot, distance between spots both defense and offense, etc. also.

Both a so called negative step and a T-step are good and should be allowed to happen naturally and should not be discouraged. If they do not happen it's because the body did not feel a need for them or because the person was trying not to do them and doing what someone else told them, not what the body knows is best. They allow for better/more deceleration and better/more acceleration in the desired horizontal direction.
